Community Stretch Goals #1: Gameplay Variants
over 5 years ago – Sun, Oct 14, 2018 at 12:21:24 AM

Hi,

Thank you for all your comments and support! We've been listening closely to your feedback, and we said something was coming during the weekend. Well, the first part is here!

Community stretch goals!

The first tier (yes, this is only the first part..) :) of the community stretch goals are all focused on gameplay variants for Project L! Help us spread the word about Project L so all your friends have the chance to get the game, too! :)

How to unlock the community stretch goals? These stretch goals are unlocked after reaching a total number of likes on the Boardcubator Facebook page. So we're not starting from 0, but at 565. Let's get it up! :)

Level 1: 700 likes! The puzzle just got more complex with additional gameplay variants! You're choices will be harder and the strategy will need to be much more thought through as you might not have all the types of pieces available for every single game. What's more, you might need work your way towards unlocking some of them before you can use them in puzzles! These variants will make you think twice about which puzzles to take and whether you'll be able to solve them effectively with what you have available.

Level 2: 850 likes! Have you just crushed your opponents with a strategy that seems flawless? You'd better think twice before using that same strategy again! In the blink of an eye, the scoring system has changed, and you need to adapt to survive! You'll get extra points for scoring conditions that will change every game, and you might even have to unlock some of them throughout the game to apply! At the end, not every piece will be worth the same amount of points to each player. The puzzles you solve during the game might be the key to everything...

Level 3: 1000 likes! Are you playing solo but it feels like there are two of you around the table? That's uncanny. How can the "L-tomaton" be so good? Maybe its AI is just getting too close to self-awareness. ;) On the other hand, the multiplayer games got just a bit more dangerous as well. Probably because everyone wants to play the new aggressive variant!

Ambassador Pack

The last part of the game we didn't talk about are the puzzle tiles in the Ambassador Pack and the mysterious M in the upper right-hand corner! Let's take a look:

Choose when to exploit the reward! When you finish the Ambassador Pack puzzles, you get access to a one-time bonus master action that you can trigger whenever you like! Once you are ready, destroy the puzzles during a perfect turn when you use the master action twice — once as your normal action and then again as the one-time puzzle reward!

What do you think? Can we unlock the first tier of community stretch goals before Thursday? Remember that this is not all that we have for you – we'll show you more amazing things for Project L tomorrow! :)

Behind the Shapes #3: Rest in Pieces
over 5 years ago – Sat, Oct 13, 2018 at 12:30:00 AM

Hi,

It's time for another part of Behind the Shapes series. We're happy we can show you the story about how the pieces got where they are now — all the way from paper to injection molded acrylic. And as promised, this one will be messy, so viewer discretion is advised. ;) But seriously... games got hurt.

Please not that in the previous part, it may have looked like we are going to produce the games ourselves, which isn't the case. These are all about our internal prototypes that we have used as a baseline for specifications of final game components. Project L will be manufactured by Panda GM to make sure every part of the game will be top notch.

Research Log

Entry #1: Adam's first iteration of the immersive tactile experience consists of 3 layers of thick colored paper glued on top of each other. After lots of playtesting, we know how much more Project L deserves!

First Project L paper pieces.

Entry #2: To take the quality up a notch, we moved on to wood. Laser cut, of course! :) It was a dead end. Too bad, the smell of laser-cut plywood was as close as we got to the feeling of having a fireplace in our office. No regrets, though. We now call it a do-it-yourself wooden earrings construction kit! Live and learn..

Entry #3: We've spent a lot of time appreciating the amazing pieces in Azul lately. They are so captivating! We just need to find out all about the magic (or ... resin) that's inside them. Getting to their arcane knowledge seems to be the only was to go. Jaroslav (the product designer) will lead the expedition. We are afraid to even imagine what we will find out. And what we will become in the process...

Almost casual lab work.

Entry #4: Jaroslav's dedication to emulate the wonderful feeling of the Azul pieces is inhuman. We wouldn't settle for anything less so he proceeded to transmute them directly into Project L! With a power saw...!!! Please don't tell Sisi, it was her copy. (Michal's note: Get all games out of the office ASAP!)

Jaroslav's dedication was unparalleled.

Entry #5: We've left resin behind. The main reason is that we wouldn't be able to ensure geometrically precise sharp cut edges. We have charted the progression of the geometrically precise experiments on the picture below. All the lab results show that all other materials are well behind acrylic in the qualities we seek. Also, Sisi is talking to us again.

Progression of the precise sharp-edge variants of pieces from cardboard through wood to acrylic.

Entry #6: We are closer to our goal that we have ever been, but there is still something missing to the laser-cut acrylic pieces we made. They are geometrically precise, great to hold in hand, and fit the puzzles perfectly. Yet, something is still missing. ...Probably color (duh!). Let's solve that! :)

Spray painting the prototype acrylic pieces.

Entry #7: Improving our lab safety measures is crucial (but is it really worth all the fun we'll miss?). Not learning from Jan and his glue fumes story, Jaroslav also almost didn't inhale an unhealthy dose of varnish. Moreover, I'm pretty sure the floor in his office wasn't purple before. Still, we're there and all the sacrifices were certainly worth it!

Research Complete! The final pieces will not be spray painted (only our current prototype is). These will be injection molded Pantone colored acrylic. This will ensure the pieces will be precise, vibrant, and simply beautiful.

Vibrant colors: check. Precise geometry: check. Pleasant weight: check. Lovely tactile feeling: double check!

What do you think about the progress the pieces made? Let us know in the comments! And if you have enjoyed the story, do check out the previous parts of this series if you have missed them!

Thank you for supporting us in this wonderful journey with Project L!

Final Level Cleared! Or not..?
over 5 years ago – Thu, Oct 11, 2018 at 10:03:51 PM

Hi,

The final unlocked piece of the Project L puzzle was unlocked! THANK YOU!

We can’t even express how happy and thankful we are that you have helped us get all what we imagined for Project L so fast! We are proud that we can bring the game to you fully unlocked with all the content and quality it deserves. Let’s take another look at how much Project L grew since the start of the campaign.

Project L base game now also includes:

  • 5th player
  • 4 white puzzles (total 32)
  • 4 black puzzles (20)
  • 20 basic pieces (60)
  • 20 advanced pieces (70)
  • 1 new game variant

Master Pledge has all above plus the following extra content in the Ghost Piece exclusive expansion:

  • 6th player variant
  • 4 white puzzles (total 12)
  • 4 black puzzles (12)
  • 15 ghost pieces (30)

These were all the stretch goals that we have carefully budgeted for and which we are confident we can produce the game with. However, that doesn't mean we have to stop just there.

Nothing is more important for us than the community

It's so great to see how far Project L got when we look at the early playtesting sessions.
It's so great to see how far Project L got when we look at the early playtesting sessions.

Many of you have commented on what you would like to see in the game as extra addition. Most frequently, you've proposed:

  • Solo mode achievements and game variants
  • End game scoring variants
  • More game variants (such as an aggressive mode)
  • Translucent ghost pieces
  • Player aids
  • Cotton bag upgrade
  • Printed rulebooks in different languages

We are continuously testing out and researching more possibilities for the game and we're quite confident the campaign journey has mysteries that are yet to be revealed!

Thank you for all the recommendations, inspiration, and for helping us bring Project L so far! And stay tuned, something is certainly coming in the next few days! :)
